SOMETHING is afoot on Romney Marsh.
A technological revolution is on the way, and Andy Leaning and Rebecca Clayton are leading the way with their businesses.
Andy, 40, has set up Copperfield Technology to help people with IT or network problems and Rebecca has launched a service offering small businesses and charities in the area low-cost web design. The two have also collaborated.
Andy moved to Lydd five years ago after working in London as a group IT Director for a corporation.
The father of two said: "I found I was doing more and more work in the Marsh and I came to the conclusion that there was obviously a gap in the services available in the area."
Copperfield Technology, Andy's business, fill the gap Andy reckons is left by big businesses who do not want to spend time and money on a large rural area with small populations.
Andy, who works with wife Emma, said: "Romney Marsh is a rural area and you can rack up some serious mileage traveling from one place to another.
"The big guys don't want to know and they don't operate a home call out facility for places like Romney Marsh. They just lose interest.
"We can get to people easily because we're based in Lydd."
The firm helps businesses and computer users across the Marsh in a variety of ways. Andy said: "We provide IT solutions. We can build systems from scratch or help repair things for small businesses and for personal computers."
Andy has now collaborated with Rebecca, who runs Web Widget to provide a one-stop shop for computer users in the Marsh.
Rebecca got started in web design almost by accident nearly 10 years ago.
She said: "I started building a website for my craft business seven to eight years ago because it was just too expensive.
"I found I had more talent for that than for craft, and I started helping out more people.
"Then in March of this year I thought it was time to get serious."
Rebecca, who has lived in the Marsh all her life, thinks businesses in the area really have the potential to grow with the help of new technologies.
She said: "On the Marsh there are so many small businesses that are nowhere on the Internet, which is one of the first places people now go when they're looking for something.
"The Marsh definately has scope for businesses to build and grow."
Although both Rebecca and Andy have their own businesses, the two have come together to form www.webit4kent.co.uk
Former Southlands pupil Rebecca said: "When I'd go out on jobs people would ask me about their network problems and when Andy went out people would ask him about web design, so owe decided to get together and set up a one-stop shop for people with IT problems.
Andy said: "If we can get the technology working here we could attract businesses and improve the area.
"There's so much potential for the Marsh."
